Why was PageRank originally developed?

  1. As a research project
  2. As a Google penalty
  3. As a link organization tool

Google uses an algorithm to keep track of the traffic that websites receive; as well as their importance, called PageRank. According to Google, PageRank counts certain aspects of a webpage (how many links they contain and the perceived quality of the links included) and uses this to estimate their importance.

This is important to know because it's assumed that websites that are more important are able to gain more links.… Continue Reading

Safe Link Building Guidelines for the Changing World of Website Content
2014-11-25 08:00:40-05

In the infancy of link building, there was a lot of link stuffing; however, now people are being much more cautious about how they link build. Regardless of concerns over how to link build, links are a strong factor toward creating organic rankings. Moreover, in spite of the algorithm updates, link building isn't likely to take on huge changes in the near future.

In order to build links safely through the changing link-building rules, consider following these guidelines.

  1. Link Out to Others

If you only link to your brand, it is a clear sign that you're link building. However, if you mix it up and add links to other websites (informational content, news articles, etc.) it will add credibility to your content.

  2. Continue Reading

  1. 1999
  2. 1992

WebCrawler, the internet's first crawler used to index full webpages, was the brainchild of Brian Pinkerton. Pinkerton created WebCrawler in 1994 and it originally worked to generate a listing of the top websites. This ranking of 25 websites was created by blending search results from both Google and Yahoo! (now includes Bing! and Ask).

WebCrawler was the first search engine to allow users to search for more than just text. Images, audio, video, news; as well as, the yellow and white pages could also be searched in addition to text like other search engines.… Continue Reading

2014-12-02 08:00:21-05

business-man-and-woman-shaking-hands-in-front-of-office-building

As you build links for your website, you cannot forget to build relationships with those you're working with. You can build relationships with site owners, those who blog, business owners and/or anyone else who is associated with a given business (or website). The most important thing is to remember is you shouldn't request a link without putting in the effort to get to know the owner(s).

There are two distinct ways you can build a relationship in order to gain links. You can start from scratch or you could utilize an already existing relationship.

  1. Building a Relationship From Scratch

Starting from scratch is the hardest way to link build.… Continue Reading

As a business owner or webmaster, you must take the time to ensure that while you're refreshing content that you do not leave behind bits and pieces or make your content mismatched.

When Link Building Goes Wrong: 8 Link Building Practices to Avoid
2014-10-13 10:13:20-04

seo-diagram

As the head of a business, you know it is important for your current and potential customers to be able to find you when they run an internet search. You also have heard of connecting the content on your website through link building; however, you're not sure where to start. The most important part of link building is understanding what you can do and what you can't do (without penalty). Knowing what NOT to do can sometimes be more helpful than knowing what you should do.

Why is knowing what not to do more important? Making a mistake when you're building links can result in a Google penalty (…in which your website becomes negatively ranked).… Continue Reading

It's been a few weeks since our last roundup, and in that time we have learned that the old adage "the Internet never forgets" is becoming less and less true for our friends across the pond.  A sweeping set of internet privacy laws enacted by the European Union is forcing Google to remove certain requested content from Web, and according to the latest report, Facebook, ProfileEngine.com and YouTube are among the top three sites to have content erased under the new policy.

The controversial "Right To Be Forgotten" (RTBF) rule was introduced last May – however, Google just released its Google Transparency Report last week, revealing that over 40% of RTBF requests were granted in the last three months.… Continue Reading

3 Ways to Get an Accurate Measurement of Your Website's Search Engine Ranking
2014-10-24 08:00:16-04

how-do-you-rank-website-search-engine-ranking

The role of an SEO company is to improve the search engine visibility of their clients and drive more online traffic (and potential conversions) to their website. Although search engine results page (SERP) rankings aren't the only measure of success, they are certainly an important indicator of positive growth.

Here at SEO Advantage, one of the first things we do is provide our clients with a free report telling them how many people are searching for their business online. Of course, getting a rudimentary overview of how your website is performing in the search engines is something you can also do on your own if you want – however the trick is making sure you are getting unfiltered results.… Continue Reading

How to Link Build Part 1: Using Direct Outreach
2014-10-29 08:00:29-04

handshake-handshaking

When link building, you cannot simply write good content and then sit back and wait for traffic to visit your website. Without promoting your content yourself, you are not likely to receive the kind of traffic you want or need for your business to thrive. Most people will tell you that harder to obtain links are more valuable to your content.

Chances are if you've been creating content for a while and it seems like you're getting no traffic, you've most likely failed to add outreach to your marketing plan. Rather than simply slap your new content on your established website, you need to add this new content into your marketing plan as well.… Continue Reading

Happy Halloween everybody! While everyone else has been getting ready for the mobs of trick-or-treaters this week, many SEOs have been pouring over ranking analyses to see if their sites were impacted by the latest Penguin update.

Born one year after its predecessor, the new Penguin 3.0 algorithm was launched on October 17th amidst much skepticism and suspense. The anticipation for the chaos the update could bring has been building up ever since Search Engine Watch published a "bloodbath" depiction of what Penguin 3.0 could mean to SEOs (complete with a cartoon of a grim reaper penguin as the featured image).… Continue Reading

Google Writes Off Authorship
2014-09-06 13:53:03-04

google-authorshipThree years ago Google announced authorship to eliminate spam and duplicate content, and offer high quality content created by a niche and industry authority in search results. It seemed the search giant intended for people populating web properties with content to play a pivotal role in how Google treated search results. After all, they bombarded us with multiple videos on how to use authorship markup on websites. They also added features, like Google Plus circle counts, and authorship impression data to Webmaster Tools.  Google seemed to value authorship more and more as time went on.

I was among the SEO professionals who scrambled to build a Google+ account, post an author photo and bio so that I could be visible in Google search results and achieve the best ranking.… Continue Reading

AdSense User Loses $46,000 to Google Punishment

google-adsense-user-bannedIdris Sami, 19, is a French-Moroccan entrepreneur who created a website called MesTextos that allows French-speakers to text for free. It's a great thing for people who don't use a cell phone or don't want mobile data costs. Alternative messaging services are popular in Europe, so Sami's niche business is fantastic.

Sami's website was using Google’s AdSense system. AdSense allows webmasters to display Google powered search ads and get a percentage of the revenues.

So many users were clicking on MesTextos' ads that by December 2013 Sami’s Google account had earned a whopping $46,000!

But as an AdSense partner, if you don’t use ads on your site exactly as Google instructs, you will be severely punished.… Continue Reading
