Brace yourself (yet again) for a series of Google algorithm changes that are aimed at "aggressively" going after hacked spam in its SERPs. According to the Google Webmaster blog:

A huge amount of legitimate sites are hacked by spammers and used to engage in abusive behavior, such as malware download, promotion of traffic to low quality sites, porn, and marketing of counterfeit goods or illegal pharmaceutical drugs, etc.

Google revealed in 2013 that hacked sites were the second most frequent cause of manual actions taken by the company. Google seems to be dead set on preventing this ongoing problem, saying:

We are aggressively targeting hacked spam in order to protect users and webmasters.

SEO Roundup (September 25 Edition): Instagram Secures Position as Social Media Top Dog and Google Warns Spammers to Watch Out
2015-09-25 15:10:39-04

Google recently issued a stern warning to webmasters who repeatedly violate the Google Webmaster Guidelines and get caught spamming, saying "In order to protect the quality of our search results, we take automated and manual actions against sites that violate our Webmaster Guidelines."

By "manual actions," they are referring to manual penalties doled out by Google Search Quality reps, not automatic penalties inflicted by the algorithm. In cases where Manual Action notifications are issued, websites who are repeat offenders and get caught may suffer "further action" by Google against their site and find the reconsideration process more difficult.

Clearly this announcement is intended as a word of warning for webmasters who practice "black hat" SEO tactics.… Continue Reading

The rise of local SEO has easily been one of the biggest changes in search optimization this past year. Local SEO has been Google's baby ever since the release of their Pigeon local algorithm update a little over a year ago. And earlier this month, this baby was given a pretty significant facelift when Google replaced the standard 7-packs with 3-packs in desktop search.

Called the "Local Snack Pack," Google likely made the change to bring the desktop results more in line with mobile search. Interestingly, one study discovered that the change had another surprising effect: the new local pack now shows in the top spot 93 percent of the time (compared to just 25 percent of the time with old pack).… Continue Reading

The content on your website is important. As a webmaster, you definitely should update your content on a regular basis, but this doesn't mean it's always best to junk all of your outdated content. The content found on your website is actually much more important than just providing information to your visitors.

Reasons to Keep Existing Content

  • If you've had your website for any length of time, then your content has already been indexed by search engines. In addition, you've likely already handled visitor traffic; therefore, your website has already been ranked by Google based on your SEO value. If you delete this indexed content, you will likely see a drop in rankings.
